Time Square is dead. Long live the Salisbury

Time Square WAS on Sliema's Tower road, next to the landmark Preluna Hotel. The long serving manager and Manchester United fan George Gatt had managed Time Square for as long as we can remember. George had always offered a wider beer choice than most Malta bars, and was one of the first in Malta to offer our Van Steenberge beer. That was until the owners of the building which also housed a hotel and a Bulgarian restaurant put the building up for sale.

But George and Lesley are back in business as "landlord and landlady" of the Salisbury Arms in Triq Il-Kbir. From what was Time Square, walk up the street to the right. At the end on the opposite side of the road is Scotts supermarket. turn left and immediately right into Triq Il-Kbir. Pass the Palace hotel on the right and Stella Maris church on the left and you will soon see the Salisbury on the same side of the road as the Palace.

Its now very much a family business with 3 generations all chipping in behind the bar. The Salisbury Arms is furnished in the style of a traditional English local with breweriana, Manchester United memoriabilia, pictures of Malta and local new stories all adourning the walls. The Salisbury Arms is open lunchtimes until 4pm and evenings from 6.30pm til late and shows live football on 3 screens.

A wide range of food is available too - sandwiches, burgers, Chinese snacks, salads, and English breakfast and Sunday lunch.

The Salibury is open on Monday lunchtimes from 10am to 4pm, and on all other days all day from 10am until "late"

The main bar area with George serving

The Salisbury Arms offers 2 Belgian Ales, Van Steenberge's Bruegel and one of Belgiums most famous beers, Duvel. It also stocks Erdinger Wheat Beer

In the second half of the 16th century, Bruegel was the best painter of his time. Today Bruegel is arguably the best of Belgium's amber ales. Unlike some, Bruegel is a living beer with secondary fermentation in the bottle. Its full bodied flavour, refreshing after taste and aromatic head make the second bottle all the more inviting. Van Steenberge's Bruegel would easily pass for a really good English bitter and is a great-tasting refreshing alternative to lager. The ideal drink to have with lunch. This beer combines well with all spices, from a hearty warm meat dish to a spicy salad. Amber beer used to be the daily beer of Northern Europe, drunk both with meals and to quench thirst.
